What purity of gold and what carat should we have our wedding rings done?

Here, in Hungary 14 and 18 carat alloys are the most common. Alloying is necessary because pure gold is a very soft and malleable material. It becomes harder by adding other metals, also we can create different coloured alloys.

The purity of the 18K alloy is higher compared to 14K alloy that is why it is softer, less resistant to physical impacts. 18K alloys are usually serves as the material for casual jewels and 14K alloys are more appropriate for everyday usage because they are harder. Wedding rings are usually worn every day that is why it is more expedient to choose the 14K gold alloy.

Scrape gold compensation

Is it possible to weld in an old or unrepairable piece of gold jewellery in able to cut back on the wedding ring costs?

Of course it is. It is important to know that the jewellery you order is not made directly from the scrape gold that you provide, it goes through an altering process. Through this metallurgical process the pure gold is extracted from the alloys and later we alloy it and colour it according to customers’ wishes.

So for example if you wish to order a white gold wedding ring pair you can bring us yellow and rosé coloured alloys with different purity.

What kind of gemstones should we choose for our jewels?

Arany ékszerek

Wedding and engagement rings are objects of great value, in many cases they are passed along through generations, that is we do not believe in working with cheap materials and easy solutions. This is true for every other handcrafted jewel since the added value should be equal to the quality of the used materials. So, we definitely need to concentrate on making timeless jewels with quality materials, paying attention to detail.

The harder the gemstone the more durable it is. For casual pieces we recommend softer gemstones because one can take care of them more easily. You can choose a unique colour of gemstone; its rarity makes the jewel exciting.

We recommend you to choose according to your personality and style.

What are the most important things to know about diamonds?

It is the hardest gemstone. Because of its inviolability and everlasting quality makes it the symbolic gemstone of wedding and engagement rings.

That is the reason why it is the most valuable as well since the original beauty of the polish can remain for centuries to come.

There are 4 factors to define its quality, the so called 4C.
– The quality of the cut and its proportions (Cut)
– The amount of inclusions or the lack of them (inclusions are little formation in the structure of the gemstone)  (Clarity)
– Its colour or its colourlessness (Colour)
– And its weight which is its exact quality (Carat Weight)

So it is not enough to know that diamonds scratch glass. That is also a misjudgement that the biggest, most expensive and clearest gemstone is the most decorative. And the list goes on. To navigate among these parameters is a discipline and one need years of practice to learn it properly. In our Atelier you can ask questions, we offer you help to find the best diamond and the most beautiful piece of jewellery according to you desires and budget.

What other gemstones could be set in the jewels?

The range of possibilities is rich. There are many different coloured gemstones which is the most spectacular attribute of a gemstone. That is why we do not go into details, we would like to mention only some gemstones which have the most typical when it comes to colour.

Ruby- Red
Sapphire- Blue, transparent, orange
Emerald- Green
Tourmaline- Pink, purple, green, orange
Topaz- Light blue
Amethyst- Purple
Aquamarine- Light blue
Olivine- Green

We would like to highlight two important things about gemstones and noble crystals:

A very important piece of information about a gemstone is its hardness. This is important to know because the harder stone the nicer it is for our jewel. It is not a nice sight to see a worn out rounded gemstone which used to be a faceted but now it looks like a half-eaten candy.

It is also important to create harmony with the chosen gemstone and the style of the jewel. It is all about the little details. We are more than happy to offer help with our perspective for our customers.

How do gemstones get into the jewel?

Drágakő foglalás

Gemstones are not set in jewel by gluing them as many believe but with gemstone setting. There are different kinds of gemstone setting methods but the principle is the same with all of them. The metal is somehow worked on the gemstone and it is fixed in the jewel.

In our Atelier the gemstones are placed with the greatest care and expertise in the jewel. In the case of accidentally losing a gemstone, we take responsibility beyond the warranty as well.

What surface finishes are there on gold jewels?

What is the difference between polished, matte and roughly worked surfaces and their durability?

Polished and matte surfaces look beautiful next to each other especially if the colours of metals are different. We all want our rings to remain in their original beauty for a long time that is why we offer you some knowledge about the different types of surface structures. Matting is created by working on the surface of the metal with a harder and harsher tool to create an even, microscopic size trenches. These small trenches are breaking down and getting smeared after a while and become shinier. So these matted surfaces become shiny.

The harsher the surface the longer it takes for it to become shiny, also the style of usage is a very important factor as well. With polished surfaces the situation is the opposite. When it comes to metals, the smoother the surface the shinier it is. Micro scratches appear on the surface making the jewel look more matte and this becomes the final state of the jewel. All kinds of surface finishes, the different types of mattes and polished surfaces can be renewed and restored.

We renew, attend to and clean the jewels which are made in our Atelier free of charge.

On which hand should we wear our wedding ring?

There are different traditions in every culture concerning this question.

The most popular tradition in the central European cultural background is that wedding rings should be worn on the left hand in the engagement and period and after the wedding it goes over to the right hand.

This tradition has its flaws because most people have different sized ring fingers. So if the ring is comfortable on the left hand it might not be that comfortable on the right. According to another romantic notion, that the ring has to be worn on the left hand ring finger, because that is on the heart’s side.

We rather approach this question from the practical side. We think it is safer to wear the ring for example on your right if you are left handed and on the left if you are right handed because the ring is less exposed to external impacts.

For the ladies we recommend not to wear the wedding ring and the engagement ring on the same finger. The jewels alongside abrade each other so much that within 5-6 years the traces are visible on both rings. That is why we highly recommend wearing the rings on the different hands.

Is it possible to change the sizes of the rings?

Taking the ring size is already a sensitive issue. It is very hard to decide which the ideal ring size is since wearing the same ring in different weather circumstances can feel different.

A change in our finger’s diameter is palpable even in a course of one day. These factors must be taken into consideration so we can wear our rings comfortably. That is why we proceed with great care when taking measurements and we offer you tremendous help with this decision.

Also, you have the opportunity to adjust the wedding ring sizes subsequently to a limited extent; even the most delicate models can be adjusted 1 or 2 sizes. Engagement rings are much easier to work with, their structures make it possible to adjust even 2 or 3 sizes.

What should be the size of a surprise ring?

Eljegyzés

What can I do if I wish to have an engagement ring made but I do not know my partner’s ring size?

Grooms are always in trouble with this issue. Our suggestion is the following: It is a good idea to arrive with a ring to our Atelier so we can measure it and get relevant information about the correct size. If a reference ring is not available we usually decide according to the bride’s body type. We can make assumptions according to this.

Naturally there is a chance that our assumptions are not correct and the size is not good but usually this approach works more or less well. Either way, the truth comes out at the handover.

That is why we do the adjustment of ring size subsequently free of charge for our clients, naturally this time with the bride present.

What should be taken into consideration when wearing jewels?

A jewel is an ornamental piece, made of noble metal. Henceforth, it is an item of serious goodwill and financial value. It must be cared for, so it can show its full beauty for long. Taking off while washing hands or bathing is advised, since soap, shampoo and different body lotions contain paraffines and greases that can deposit in small metal corrugations – especially under the precious stones – and make them blurry. In addition, loofahs or brushes can scratch the metallic surface.

It’s important to know when wearing jewelry that, even though noble metals do not oxidize, I.e. they do not enter into a reaction with their surroundings, but a few thermal waters can decolour them. It’s highly advised to leave our jewelry for safekeeping when visiting thermal baths or swimming pools, even more since a lot of people tend to lose their belongings in places like these.

Noble metals are soft materials, they are vulnerable. We should consider in what situations do we really want to wear our jewelry. We don’t need them during packing luggage; moreover they can be dangerous in these cases!

Regarding precious stones it’s good to know, that they are complicated little „creatures” made by nature, having microscopic inclusions in them, so it’s possible that having it accidentally collide with something might make it crack, or snap.

TAKE CARE OF THEM!

How should we keep our jewels clean at home?

Many misconceptions circulate on the internet in connection with the cleaning of jewels at home but none of them are efficient. Moreover, for some jewels a thorough cleaning with a toothbrush could be damaging.

We recommend a special gold and silver cleaning liquid available for this purpose only.

Also, if you jewel does not shine in its original glory, ask for professional help, someone who is thorough, cleans and polishes the jewel, checks the setting and the prongs of the gemstones whether they need any corrections.
